What is Radon Gas?
Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless radioactive gas that is formed during the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. Radon exits the ground and can seep into your home through cracks in the foundation (Radon gas can also contaminate well water). Note: Radon also seeps into the air outside your home but is rapidly diluted in the atmosphere.
Why is it a Problem?
Health officials have determined that Radon gas is a carcinogen that can cause lung cancer. When you breathe air containing elevated levels of Radon gas, you increase your risk of getting lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today.
Where is it a Problem?
Some areas have more Radon problems than others, but more homes with Radon problems have been found in the southern Michigan counties (See Map Below).
How do you get rid of it?
If you find that your home has a high Radon levels, there are ways to reduce the concentrations. Even very high levels can be reduced to acceptable levels. Most Radon problems can be fixed for about $600 - $750 depending on the size and configuration of your home.
